- Bullying is the repetitive intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group. This relationship involves an imbalance of power.
- Bullying can be physical or verbal. It can happen face-to-face or online. Being bullied can affect people in many ways such as causing depression, insecurities, and low self-esteem.
- Students ages 12-18 who reported being bullied said they thought those who bullied them:
- Had the ability to influence students' perception on them, Had more social influence, Were physically stronger or larger, And had more money
- Cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. People who experience cyberbullying are more likely to experience face to face bullying and humiliation. Blocking and reporting people isn’t always effective because they can create new accounts.
- A common myth is that cyberbullying isn’t real because people can just get offline. However this actually punishes the person getting bullied. Why should they have to be inconvenienced because of someone else?
- Cyberbullying is persistant because Digital devices offer an ability to immediately and continuously communicate 24 hours a day, so it can be difficult for children experiencing cyberbullying to find relief.
- cyberbullying is Permanent because most information communicated electronically is permanent and public, if not reported and removed. A negative online reputation, including for those who bully, can impact college admissions, employment, and other areas of life.
- Lastly, because teachers and parents may not hear or see cyberbullying take place, it Is harder to recognize.
- Gun violence is the leading cause of death and injury for teenagers in the U.S. More than 5% of students who were bullied reported access; 9.2 % of those cyberbullied reported access. 15 % of those who experienced both types of bullying reported access to a loaded gun. This proves that children who have been abused and bullied have a higher propensity for using guns.
