About:
This 8-card flashcard set covers core astronomy vocabulary for Grades 10–12, including absolute magnitude, apogee, constellations, declination, nadir, and radio astronomy. The set emphasizes observational astronomy and coordinate systems. Use it for astronomy class review, exam preparation, or self-study of fundamental celestial concepts.
Terms in This Set
- A measure of a star's absolute brightness. It is defined as the apparent magnitude the star would show if it were located at a distance of 10 parsecs, or 32.6 light-years.
- The point at which a body orbiting the Earth is furthest from the Earth. Opposite: perigee.
- An identifiable grouping of stars. Assigned by tradition and often are related to mythology and folklore. The names and stories may change from culture to culture.
- A field of study. The science of research of the origins, evolutionary process, and eventual fate of the Universe. Where did we come from? Where are we going?
- Astronomical equivalent of terrestrial latitude. Coordinates north of the equator are measured in positive degrees from 0° to 90°, south are measured in negative. Also used with compass.
- To the observor, the point directly under your foot. The opposite of this is zenith, which is the point directly overhead.
- A type of astronomy that studies celestial bodies through radio frequencies. This uses large antennas know as arrays
- The collection of stars visible at any one time. It could be with the naked eye, with a telescope. Often includes other objects around what you're looking at.
