These 25 activity-based bingo cards extend Allen Say's Grandfather's Journey for 1st Grade learners across multiple subjects. Activities span origami and painting, map skills and geography (Japan, California, Ring of Fire), calculating steamboat speed, family trees, Bible passages (John 4, Luke 10:30–37, Psalm 137:1–5, Ruth), and portrait drawing. Use these cards for homeschool unit work, literature-enrichment activities, or to structure independent reading projects around the book.
Word List
- Fold a piece of paper using origami to make an object of your choice (perhaps a boat)
- Locate Japan and California on a world map and calculate the distance between them
- Research the speed at which a steam boat would travel from Japan to California
- Calculate the speed of the steamboat using the time (3 weeks) and the distance you found on the map
- Research the Ring of Fire and show on a map with tectonic plates
- Learn the names of the Japanese islands
- Find the Sierra Mountains on a map of California
- Find areas of desert in the United States and learn their names
- Find areas in the United States where you would find endless farm fields
- Make a familiy tree where you are the fourth generation. Try to complete the tree to your great-grandparents. Where was everyone from?
- Paint a picture of mountains and a river, such as you find on page 11
- Paint a picture of the seacoast of California, such as on page 14
- Compare grandfather's traditional Japanese clothing on page 4 to his Western clothing on page 5
- Choose a species of bird, warbler and make a technical drawing of the bird you select
- Make a list of the different clothing elements in Western dress, e.g. cardigan, vest, double-breasted overcoat, bowler hat
- Research the parts of traditional Japanese dress (kimono)
- Read John 4 and respond in your journal
- Read Luke 10:30-37 and respond in your journal
- Read Psalm 137:1-5 and respond in your journal
- Read Ruth, looking for themes of travel and homesickness
- Learn the months of the year, days of the week
- Print a calendar and count how many days grandfather was on the steamboat (3 weeks)
- On p. 10 we see a city with polllution. Learn what causes air pollution in a big city.
- Draw a self-portrait and family portrait in formal portrait style
- Draw a self-portrait and family portrait in casual style (active shot, less like a photo)
